Although it could be argued that Snake should've died at the end, there is still something so peaceful knowing that Snake didn't. An ending even he thought wasn't possible. One of the wackiest things to ever happen to the Metal Gear franchise, there was a brief moment where Solid Snake actually crossed-over with the Ape Escape franchise.
There is even an Ape imitation of Solid Snake that players can actually control which is pretty nuts. Sadly this fun easter egg of a game is only available in Ape Escape 3 in conjunction with the Snake vs. Sadly the fun crossover hasn't been seen since. Despite the accusations that Liquid Snake has claimed to his brother, the fact that he is designed as a super soldier and that he partly admits that his place is on the battlefield.
He fights his hardest to fight for world peace. He did retire and wanted it to stay that way only to be dragged by circumstance. It was only after fighting for others for almost all of his life and after talking with his father that he eventually decided to live peacefully once again.
That's the key there, Solid Snake is happy to put down his gun, but he doesn't because he had a job to do. Refusing to use something a traitor used, plus the fact that it was ahead of its time. This meant that throughout the majority of his Metal Gear entries, he purposely nerfed himself.
Considering what he was capable of when using CQC, it's actually incredible what he was truly able to do. In a sense, he freed himself from the shackles his fathers and genetic legacy placed on him. Not only that, but he was also the owner of a bunch of Huskies.
Being a dog musher, he planned to participate in the Alaskan Iditarod. Is he his own man? Snake is introspective and his monologues are the few moments where we get a glimpse into his mind.
Metal Gear Solid 2 is a hard game for everyone involved. Raiden is mentally and physically broken by the end of the game; Otacon is faced to live with the fact that everyone he loves will leave him in increasingly painful ways; and Solidus is masterminded by Liquid Ocelot to the point where any action he takes ends in his ultimate loss.
Everyone suffers. Except for Solid Snake. Following the events of MGS1 , Snake reaches his prime. Unfortunately, what The Boss wants for the world is misinterpreted by Big Boss, creating a chain reaction of decades upon decades of warfare.
Only one man truly understands her will: Solid Snake. Despite never meeting The Boss, Solid Snake wishes for a world untouched and untampered by outside forces. He wants to let the world be, to allow the world to heal and move on naturally. Despite being weaker than his supposed big brother, however, Solid Snake is clearly the far more skilled fighter. Having trained directly under Big Boss, Snake is able to beat Liquid down, weaving in and out of attacks for the entire fight.
Consistently, Snake is able to outperform the competition and survive situations that would otherwise render him deceased.
Metal Gear is the poster boy for retcons as far as video game narratives are concerned. Every game brought with it new information that bordered on being incompatible with previous titles. Specifically, Solid Snake used to be blond. It's hard to imagine a blond Big Boss all things considered.
Age is not kind to him, however, and he shrinks a bit when heading into Metal Gear Solid 4. Even the greatest soldier in history will lose pieces of himself as he ages. Snake gets a bad rap for parroting dialogue quite frequently, but his high IQ does make sense. Do remember this is the man who thought to combine a lighter and hairspray to defeat Big Boss on Zanzibarland.
No matter what happens, no matter what danger lurks around the corner, Snake is able to push himself to overcome any odd imaginable. This is a man who never gives up, a man whose convictions are so powerful they keep him from an early grave in Metal Gear Solid 4.
Snake is able to defeat enemies far stronger than him consistently. The twist is about as absurd as some of the ways the series used Nanomachines, and this prime example of Metal Gear logic is just as awesome as it is silly. Deciding when exactly Solidus Snake died is a fun one, as the character is technically killed by Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2.
While one might expect this to be the end of the armored antagonist, the character reappears in Metal Gear Solid 4. While many fans remember MGS 2 fondly for its mind-blowing twist , Solidus Snake is certainly a unique character with two equally unique deaths — and is just as deserving of the appreciation received by the rest of his relatives. Often portrayed as an anti-hero, the once noble goals of the MGS 3 protagonist faded as the world changed around him.
Using increasingly cruel strategies in his ongoing battles against the Patriots, the true antagonists of the MGS series , Big Boss is not only a great allegory for war but an extremely complex character in his own right as well. John or sometimes Jack met his tragic end due to the FOXDIE virus, but he died in the most peaceful way possible: having a conversation with his only living son by the grave of his beloved mentor and mother, The Boss.
Taking one final smoke before his last breath, Naked Snake meets his end in the same exact way as his son Liquid. It is extremely likely that the character did die like his fellow Snakes, however, which is part of the reason many feel like MGS 6 could never live up to its predecessors.
Promising to watch over the new world he helped create from afar, Solid Snake steps into the shadows as the credits for MGS 4 begin to roll.
