Puzzlewood is spread across acres, and there is evidence that links the site to cast iron ore mining from the Roman period. There are claims that say it was around these parts that Tolkien heard a story about a cursed Roman ring bearing an inscription on it, shortly after he began work on The Hobbit. Hoh Rainforest is one of the largest temperate rainforests in America and is spectacular. The soaring trees are covered in fairytale-like moss, fern and foliage so evocative of Treebeard and the rest of his pals.
A hiking trail known as the Hall of Mosses is the spot to regale in proper Middle-earth vibes as you walk below branches enveloped in enchanting moss. In Middle-earth, the Lonely Mountain is a lone peak in the north of Wilderland. It was the seat of a thriving dwarf kingdom until Smaug brought his desolation upon it. Legend has it that the forest at the foot of the mountain is home to goblins and demons. Why not evoke the spirit of Bilbo Baggins, a true explorer, by going on an adventure across the magical landscapes of Iceland?
The author even had an Icelandic nanny at one point and through her became acquainted with Norse mythology from Icelandic folklore that in some way will have influenced many of the beloved characters and destinations from his fantastic universe.
But they have, I think, quickened; and I imagine we are actually at the end of the Sixth Age, or in the Seventh. Tolkien, ] A final note is that not only is the place our own world but also the people inhabiting it are ourselves, morally as well as physically I have not made any of the peoples on the 'right' side, Hobbits, Rohirrim, Men of Dale or of Gondor, any better than men have been orare, or can be.
Mine is not an 'imaginary' world, but an imaginary historical moment on 'Middle-earth' - which is our habitation.
Tolkien, , , , Contributors: William D. Loos , Carl F. Hostetter , Bill Taylor Here you can find informations concerning Middle-earth. Actually, I didn't know where to put this pages, so here they are. This site is maintained and copyrighted c , by Cirdan. Gods, we believe, represented the great forces of nature and the passions of mankind: wind, sea, war, love, death, family, etc.
So, if the gods are metaphors for the things that drive us or our world, where do the other things fit in? Giants may be used to explain the massive neolithic monuments scattered across the world, built by ancient, long-forgotten cultures that were probably destroyed, driven off, or absorbed by the ancestors of the Germans and Scandinavians. The Elves and Dwarves may represent memories of those ancient cultures.
But this is all guesswork. In developing his stories, J. Unlike our ancestors, however, Tolkien was only trying to tell a rollicking good story that seemed complete and as nearly believable as possible.
Our ancestors simply tried to put the pieces of an incomplete puzzle together and ended up telling some rollicking good stories nonetheless. Midgard and Middengeard represent how our northern ancestors described the same world, not fully knowing what its physical shape was. Have you read our other Tolkien and Middle-earth Questions and Answers articles? This would not be the first time that this had happened, as it seems that a consequence from the Siege of Utumno was that Endor rotated eastward, its axis the north pole.
Middle-earth was home to several distinct intelligent species. The Silmarillion tells how Elves and Men awaken and spread through the world. Those who remained faithful to the Valar found the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor.
Tolkien identified Hobbits as an offshoot of the race of Men. Although their origins and ancient history are not known, Tolkien implied that they settled in the Vales of Anduin early in the Third Age, but after a thousand years the Hobbits began migrating west over the Misty Mountains into Eriador. Eventually, many Hobbits settled in the Shire. The Dwarves spread throughout northern Endor and eventually found seven kingdoms.
Orcs and Trolls were evil creatures bred by Morgoth. Their origins are not detailed Tolkien considered many possibilities and frequently changed his mind. It seems most likely that the Orcs were bred largely from corrupted Elves or Men, or both.
Saruman bred Orcs and Men together to produce "Men-orcs" and "Orc-men"; at times, some of these are called "half-orcs" or "goblin-men". Some of them might be Maiar in animal form, or perhaps even the offspring of Maiar and normal animals. It is unknown to what people of Middle-earth Tom Bombadil belonged. As to his nature, Tolkien himself said that some things should remain mysterious in any mythology, hidden even to its inventor.
These languages were related, and a Common Eldarin form ancestral to them both is postulated. The history of Middle-earth is divided into three time periods, known as the Years of the Lamps , Years of the Trees and Years of the Sun ; the latter is typically sub-divided further into four Ages , of which three are relevant to the printed works of the legendarium.
The Years of the Lamps began shortly after the Valar finished their labours in shaping Arda. The Valar lived in the middle, at the island of Almaren. Melkor 's destruction of the two Lamps marked the end of the Years of the Lamps.
The Trees illuminated Aman, leaving the rest of Arda in darkness, illuminated only by the stars. Many of the Elves were persuaded to undertake the Great Journey westwards towards Aman, but not all of them completed the journey see Sundering of the Elves. The Valar attacked and defeated Melkor in the War for Sake of the Elves , and he was imprisoned for several ages in the Halls of Mandos. But he appeared to repent and was released on parole.
The larger group was led by Fingolfin. The Years of the Sun began when the Valar made the Sun and it rose over the world. After several great battles, a long peace ensued for four hundred years, during which time the first Men entered Beleriand by crossing over the Blue Mountains.
When Morgoth broke the siege of Angband , one by one the Elven kingdoms fell, even the hidden city of Gondolin. Thingol quarrelled with the Dwarves of Nogrod and they slew him, stealing the Silmaril. By the end of the age, all that remained of the free Elves and Men in Beleriand was a settlement at the mouth of the River Sirion. The Valar responded with the War of Wrath.
Melkor was captured, most of his works were destroyed, and he was banished beyond the confines of the world into the Door of Night. The Silmarils were recovered at a terrible cost, as Beleriand itself was broken and began to sink under the sea. Feanor's last remaining sons, Maedhros and Maglor , were ordered to return to Valinor. They proceeded to steal the Silmarils from the victorious Valar. But, as with Melkor, the Silmarils burned their hands and they then realized they were not meant to possess them and that the oath was null.
Each of the brothers met his fate: Maedhros threw himself with the Silmaril into a chasm of fire, and Maglor threw his Silmaril into the sea.
Thus began the Second Age. But after a few centuries, Sauron , Morgoth's chief servant, began to organize evil creatures in the eastern lands. He persuaded Elven smiths in Eregion to create Rings of Power , and secretly forged the One Ring to control the other rings.
But the elves became aware of Sauron's plan as soon as he put the One Ring on his hand, and they removed their own Rings before he could master their wills.
